Neither moron.com or en.wikipedia.org/moron is home to Moron Says What?!?!, Auckland's hottest new band. Judging by their repertoire of stupifyingly awesome songs, they'll have all manner of addresses sooner or later, but how important is that anyway? Somewhat relevant when their songs are about the internet, Japanamania and literary disfunctions.

Auckland's most exciting new band come out of the classroom to invade our imaginations and hearts with their songs seemingly deploring and celebrating the menial everyday, concurrently. MSW prove themselves worthy of the premature hype they've received.

The most badassingly awesome band build epically awesome pop songs on Le Tigre sass, Eddie Bo rhythmic shouts and new wave pop influences, shown in their use of "melody horn" and hand claps. Bursting onto the scene no earlier than a couple of months ago as both not-so-fragile youths and incredibly aware, talented and uniquely individual kids, MSW put the soul back into live performance and the grin back onto everyone's faces.

Mapping the stage with energy and chaos and even one of their mums (they were hurried home after a recent set at the Real Groove/Groove Guide Christmas party because they had final NCEA exams the next day), MSW are all attitude, and not in the least the bad kind. Watch their myspace for a gig in the near future, and somebody make them a Wikipedia page!!

This is a joke right? Between this and the utter tuneless shite that is the DHDFDs, I seriously wonder what the fuck people are smoking when they rave about how amazing these kiddie bands are. It'd be lovely if the people of NZ would start listening to proper music instead of rubbing themselves raw over novelty acts.

I'm afraid I kind of agree, although very much more politely! Your review was great, the band less so...noisy, but not good noisy. However, there's plenty of music here on your blog that is new to me, so I'm going to have a proper scout :o)

Wow, sorry you disagree, but thanks so much for your feedback! We welcome your responses, however I must say the thing I most applaud in a band is energy and enthusiasm. You guys have shown that you differ in that opinion, and that's fine. But the the least important thing to me, personally, is technical proficiency. Obviously MSW's recordings are of a shite quality, but this will only get better, no doubt, as will their songs and structures etc. Thanks again for the comments! :) I hope you enjoy the future posts we do here :) & do browse the backlog, Nick has worked hard on it for years!

They have crap recordings, but its not exactly easy to afford recording time these days. These kids on one hell of a live show. Why would anyone have let a band open for Architecture in Helsinki otherwise?

Damn right!

haha energy and enthusiasm live are awesome and definitely something I look for in a band, but unless theres's actually half decent music to back it up, what's the point? Not saying these guys won't improve, but it's probably detrimental to heap so much praise on them so early. Nothing worse than believing your own hype to destroy a band.

I think the band is as surprised by peoples' positive reactions as we are by their music! Every young band benefits from encouragement, and it's evident after the praise they've already received. They do have the talent to back it up, I think. Thanks for your thoughts! :)

No disrespect to anonymous or divinyl but I believe Moron Says What?!?! are the most exciting band in the country right now, bar So So Modern, who aren't really in the country. Every once and a while, a band comes along with something so damn electrifying it makes you disregard things you would've previously used as markers when judging new bands. No one else has this x factor in nz as far as i have seen except ssm and probably coyh. Although MSW aren't avant-garde musical pioneers, they are catchy as hell, and are leaving VERY big impressions on many important people, which is obviously highlighted by the shows they are getting asked to play now - opening for Architecture in Helsinki? - you can't argue with that, mr. anonymous! Personally, I too do not fancy the DHDFDs that much, but their music is incomparable to MSW - just because a band is young does not mean we should group them all together and throw them aside until they grow up and play "proper" music. I think that is a sad state of mind, and such youthful exuberance should be encouraged as much as possible and that although many young bands don't have the song writing experience, we should not ignore gems like MSW, who throw the old rules out the window with so much joyful exuberance by using semitone shift basslines and melody horns and the like, just because they want to. I understand how you believe the massive hype sorrunding msw is a bit too much, considering the extremely lo-fi recordings on their myspace, but the music these girls write is good. It is true that over hyping MSW could be detrimental - even though they seem to be like the kind of girls that would whole-heartedly agree with the criticism dished out here - but writing them off in such a manner on the basis of a few initial songs recorded on a laptop months and months ago surely wont help either. I recommend that any doubters check MSW out live before you judge them. Most MSW virgins get blown away by the energy, and I was wowed especially by their new songs that aren't up on the 'space.

meh, lofi recording aside, they're just bad songs. I dunno, I think I'm completely missing some kinda gene that makes me dig half the NZ bands people shit themselves over (MSW, Thought Creature, the coolies and a bunch more). To each their own I guess. I'll reserve judgement til I see them live I spose, but for the time being I'm cynical enough to think that if MSW wasn't comprised of teenage girls they'd be more or less ignored.

no one needs to like the coolies.

I think Moron Says What are Great.

I think it's funny how people think Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music is genius because he wrote Sweet Jane.

The songs are fun, sure. The lyrics are kooky and the subject matter is cute, but it's like...they're blatantly not 'the most exciting band in the country right now'.

this whole indie thing is kind of annoying in that, there are bands who have AMAZING songs that should be getting talked about way more, but these bands seem to get left by the wayside in favour of bands that wear cooler clothes, or hang out with the right people.

the enright house, mechano (this band should have been HUUUUGE but in wellington nobody seemed to give a fuck, maybe if their jeans were a little tighter, perhaps a fluro yellow?), fighting the shakes (these guys have finally been written about a little bit around the place recently, but they've been around for yonks and its taking far too long for them to get recognised!)

MSW are cool, i think not quite as cool as all the praise that's been heaped on them may suggest.

hopefully this long rant made sense...screw proof reading!

The fact that people are still debating the validity of MSW?!?! seems to me to be proof of their relevance, as any band that generates this much discussion deserves to be recognised! Though it's up to the individual how much they are revered.

For us at Einstein it's not just about the clothes – which are definitely not your run-of-the-mill Supré knock offs! Their songs are unique and interesting and their energy when they play them live is kick ass!

People tend to appreciate a bold sense of style, and for that I applaud MSW?!?!, they have it in spades!

Of course it's to each their own, but it's so cool that people are so into speaking their minds about it, thanks! :)

Why are the negative comments always from anonymous people? It's great you feel so passionately about music but don't be shy, it's fun to share your opinion.

And we respect your opinion, even if we do disagree. And who said we don't like the Enright House? just because we haven't written about them doesn't mean they have gone unnoticed. As for style, well what a load of crap. I think if you look back through the blog you'll find we have featured a diverse range of bands and musical styles, well I hope we have.

So yeah, you have your opinion, we have ours. I just hope you have found a band on Einstein that you may not have heard before. At least you got a chance to hear it right?

Hey, just want to make it clear, none of that post was meant to be a dig at the einstein blog! i've discovered a couple of new bands who are really sweet thanks to you cats.

Those were just my thoughts on the indie scene in nz at the moment in general.

I also don't wanna discourage the MSW members if they read that post, because it's not to say they're not good. they definitely have loads of potential and sound like they're having shitloads of fun (which is the most important thing anyway). give em time, and the means to record with a little more quality and i'm sure i'll be just another convert!

keep on bloggin'!

New here,

I'm just browsing sites for the kids of Haiti.

I'm doing this for a non-profit haiti group that devotes themselves to
creating an oppurunity for the kids in haiti. If anyone wants to donate then then please do so here:

They provide children in Haiti a positive outlook through education.

Please check them out, they're a real cause.

It would be great if you could help

This might be a bit off-topic but I believe there are a lot of smokers here on www.blogger.com. I have recently decided to find a good manufacturer of e-smokes. I'm done with paying so much for tobacco cigarettes.A friend recommended G Smoke According to their website this is how they described their product:
"Green Smoke offers supreme Electronic cigarettes with spendable cartridges that compose of the highest smoke volume in the industry. With a collection of flavors and nicotine levels, Green Smoke's™ patented technology offers convenience and exhibit performance that is unmatched. G Smoke products have been independently tested for safety."
I'm thinking of buying them. Anyone else have experience with this e-cigarette?
